Dermatopathology

Dr. Brett Summey examining a specimen.

Since 2009, Boone Dermatology has provided dermatopathology to complement our comprehensive medical and surgical dermatologic services. Dr. Brett Summey Jr.,  is double board certified in dermatology and dermatopathology and examines biopsy and excisional specimens for all of our dermatologists. The addition of in-office pathology services will improve the care of our patients by providing direct communication between the dermatologist and dermatopathologist. In some circumstances this will allow the dermatopathologist to see the lesion or rash before the biopsy is taken, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of the dermatologic condition. In addition, this service will allow direct access of the office's pathology specimens for our Mohs micrographic surgeon, allowing more precise surgeries.

What is Dermatopathology?

Dermatopathology is the examination and diagnosis of skin disorders.

A dermatopathologist is a highly trained physician who specializes in diagnosing skin diseases under a microscope. Dermatopathologists, after completing their training in dermatology, pursue additional training in accredited programs for the interpretation of skin biopsies. The accurate microscopic interpretation of the biopsy is important in the selection of appropriate therapies. Dermatopathologists provide a personal, consultative service to your dermatologist, which includes analyzing your medical information in conjunction with observations through the microscope. The ultimate goal is to provide the best possible care for the patient.
